Laboratories

Digitizing a NABL lab: which ISO/IEC 17025 records belong in software

ISO/IEC 17025 labs carry a heavy record burden. Some of it is repetitive work that software handles better than people.

A laboratory working to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 has to keep technical records, control its documents, track equipment calibration, manage personnel competence, and handle complaints, nonconforming work and corrective actions. Many labs hold this across paper files, spreadsheets and certificate templates.

What gains most from software

  • Equipment and standards registers with calibration due dates and alerts.
  • Worksheets that apply corrections and compute results consistently.
  • Personnel authorisation, so only competent people sign certain results.
  • Review and approval before a certificate or report is issued.
  • Document control, internal audits, complaints and corrective actions.

Calibration labs and testing labs differ

A calibration lab works on customer instruments, applies corrections and reports uncertainty against its accredited scope. A testing lab traces a sample through testing, review and report. The two need different setups, which is why CalQMS and TestQMS are separate applications rather than one compromise.

Whatever you use, the principle is the same: the person decides and signs, and the software handles the arithmetic, the checks and the record.
